Learning How to Hold a Thai Pad:
Learning how to hold Muay Thai pads properly is a must for every Muay Thai student. Not only is it a great way to sharpen your skills during open gym time but it will also help your teammates succeed in their training. After all, the better your partners are, the better you’ll be!
For intermediate and advanced students, learning proper pad holding not only ensures the safety of both you and your partner, but it also develops your training relationship as well.
Here is Muay Thai World Champion and Evolve MMA Muay Thai instructor Namsaknoi Yudthagarngamtorn’s tips for pad holders:
1) Always hold the pads against the intended point of contact – this not only prevents injury but also helps your partner aim better.
2) Always stay focused in the moment. By paying attention to what your partner is doing, you’ll not only know where to hold the pads but also prevent yourself from getting hit!
3) Always start with easy combinations first. Namsaknoi recommends starting off with any combination punch then following it up with kicks, knees and elbows.
4) Always keep your arm locked and tight when you’re holding the pads. As much as possible, try to prevent from forcing the pads into the person’s strikes.
Enjoy your next pad work session!
