Build Your Home Kickboxing Setup on a Budget
Whether you’re new to Kickboxing, Boxing or Muay Thai and want to supplement your gym training, having a home setup can make all the difference. You don’t need a huge space or expensive equipment, with the right gear, you can get a full workout from the comfort of your home. Here’s some information on how to build a kickboxing setup without breaking the bank.
Your first investment
You have decided you want to expand your training outside of the club and into your home, so where do we start and how much is that initial investment? The first question is, will you have a training partner while working out at home, or are you going at it solo. If partnering up, items that are very useful would be focus pads, Thai pads and possibly a good body shield. These items are practical and can be purchased through vendors like us for a reasonable price. If you will be training yourself, something like a free-standing bag is a perfect choice and can be moved around from location to location within the home and does not require any mounting or extra hardware if going the heavy bag route. Or something like a Double End Ball that attaches to the ceiling and ground and takes up very little space is also a great option.

Gloves and Hand Wraps: Safety first
Gloves and Wraps protect your hands, wrists, and knuckles during punching drills. Even on a budget, it’s worth investing in a quality pair of training gloves and hand wraps. You want to look for a glove that offers excellent wrist support and stiff padding in the knuckle area, ideally a 12oz weighted Boxing Glove. Hand Wraps are the icing on the cake and help those individuals with existing wrist and hand injuries and help provide a more stiff and secure fit within the glove. A good pair of Boxing Gloves and Hand Wraps can be found relatively cheap, but remember, these are an investment so make sure the equipment you buy will withstand the type of abuse you are going to put them through.

Mats: Protect Your Floor and Joints
Even a small area can benefit from a few interlocking mats. They provide cushioning for kicks, footwork drills, and stretches, while protecting your floors. You don’t need a full studio and the most common sizes to accommodate your area are 6pcs, 8pcs and 12pcs. The beauty of interlocking puzzle mats is that you can always add on if you feel the space is too small, or you had a few extra friends join in on the fun and things are getting crowded. Most Puzzle style mats are available in multiple sizes of 20mm, 25mm and 40mm thick. You can easily make do with a 20mm Puzzle mat, if you are not doing any takedowns or breakfalls, but we highly recommend a 25mm thick mat for that extra cushioning, especially if laid over a concrete floor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not necessarily. While a heavy bag is great for power and endurance, beginners can get a full workout with mitts, kick pads, or shadowboxing. Freestanding bags, Speed bags and Double End balls are a compact alternative and require minimal hardware or set up.
For fitness or beginner kickboxing, 12–14 oz gloves usually work well. Ensure there is ample wrist support, dense padding in the knuckles and you want to look for a tight snug fitting glove.
Absolutely! Shadowboxing, freestanding bags, or padded targets allow you to practice strikes safely solo.
A small 8×8 ft area is sufficient for basic drills. Even a 4×4 mated area can provide cushioning for kicks, stretches, and footwork.
Wipe down gloves and pads after each session. For mats, give them a quick once over with a damp mop or rags to soak up any sweat (we suggest warm water and dish soap to help prevent bacteria from building up)
